Dog in military uniform in an ornate frame on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A dog wearing a blue military-style uniform with gold epaulettes, braided cord and medals is shown in a formal portrait pose, framed by an ornate gold scrollwork border. The dog and uniform are rendered with smooth shading and bold outlines, with a dark teal background behind the figure. The oval composition sits on the outer thigh, with the frame filling most of the photograph against a plain light background.

The cook found the paymaster's old dress jacket in the slop locker, and by the time the galley fire was banked for the night, it was buttoned across your chest with the gold cord looped under your jaw. Nobody aboard the Hesper had ever seen a lieutenant with such a chest, and nobody was going to say so. The captain took one look at you over his port and declared you had the bearing of a man who had seen the Baltic. You did not disagree.

After that you dined at the wardroom table on pheasant scraps and the cook's hard bread, and you learned to sit as still as a figurehead when the sea came green over the bow. The hands saluted you on the ladder. Old Pardew, who had lost two fingers to a halyard block, swore you had once smothered a flue fire by sitting on it, and nobody was willing to argue with a dog who held a medal for it.
Then came the inquiry into the lamp smashed in the powder passage. The first lieutenant stood with his hat under his arm and asked who had been careless. The cook studied the deck. The surgeon studied the ceiling. Every eye turned to you, the braid catching the lantern light, and the captain, who had never once in his life admitted a mistake, said the lieutenant had been on watch and would take the blame with dignity. You wagged once. It was entered in the log as a salute.
Dawn found you back in the galley, the jacket on its hook and the cook's rough hand working behind your ears. He called you sir under his breath, the way a man speaks to someone he trusts with secrets, and you let the pot boil over without lifting a paw to stop it. A lieutenant has his priorities.
