Collage of five small fine line tattoos in black ink: a crescent moon on the wrist, a sprig on the upper arm, a star constellation on the upper back, a botanical sprig on the ribs and a dotted line

Fine line moon, sprig and star tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

This collage shows five separate small tattoos on different parts of the body, each photographed on skin with no faces visible. The designs include a crescent moon on the wrist, a delicate sprig on the upper arm, a dotted star constellation across the upper back, a botanical sprig on the ribs and a dotted line ending in a star on the chest. All are finely drawn in black ink with plenty of white space around them.

Dear Tom,

The moon's gone to a paring again, the thin sort Mam used to say was the one to make wishes under, and I've been out on the step with the lamp off trying to find the stars you showed me on the back wall of the lamp room. Dad says the coal dust has taken them all, but it hasn't. Seven of them hang in a crooked line over the heap, and I joined them up with my finger the way you taught me, like a dotted road going somewhere.

Mrs Harbottle's boy came round with the post this morning and there was nothing from the ship, so I've decided the letter is somewhere between here and Hull being kind to you. In the meantime I have pressed a sprig of the hawthorn from the lane into your old atlas, between Norway and the Faroes, because you always said a thing was only lost if nobody marked where it had gone.

Dad is on the early shift again. His hands are bad in the cold, so I've been doing the grate and the bread, and Ada next door has started calling me Mrs Carr, which I am not going to answer to yet.

Write when you can. Tell me if the sea has any moon in it, and whether the stars look the same from the boat, or if they come out thinner over the water. I'll keep the lamp lit on the step until I know you're still counting them too.

Your loving sister, Nell
