Dotted line tattoos on fingers meeting at the centre
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Several hands are arranged with their fingers radiating outwards from a central point on a light wooden table. Each finger carries a single thin black line with evenly spaced dots along its length, giving a stitch-like or dotted appearance. The ink is solid black on the skin, the photograph has a warm, slightly yellowed tone, and the composition is a symmetrical star shape filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Quayle kept the sail loft above the harbour on Scarra, and she would not let us near the big canvas until we had learned to walk a pricking wheel along a chalk line. Each dot was a stitch we had to place without looking, so the thread would sit straight when the wind came at a foresail in February. My cousins and I were eleven and twelve and thought it a punishment. Our fingers were always pricked and bleeding a little under the plaster.

The summer the Merrow came in with a torn mainsail, Mrs Quayle sent us to lay the cloth flat on the boards and mark where the new panels would go. She had us put our fingertips to the centre of the sheet and draw outward, six of us around one point, the way the sun spokes off a hub. Where our nails met, she said, was where the wind would pull hardest. Then she pressed a fresh chalk line under each finger, and we pricked it with a steady hand while the radio muttered about the weather out past Rockall.
I still think of that morning when I see the ferry shiver against the pier. Mrs Quayle died the winter after, and the loft was let to a man who sold kayaks. Last month I climbed the stairs for an old pricking wheel and found the boards still bearing our faint marks, six dotted rays meeting at a point gone brown with age. I put my finger to the centre, the way we were taught, and felt the seam under it hold.
