Dotwork pineapple on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pineapple is shown in stippled dotwork, with a spiky crown of leaves above a diamond-patterned body. The shading is built entirely from dots in black ink, with denser areas giving depth to the fruit and lighter dots softening the edges. The tattoo sits centrally on a smooth, lightly lit arm against a plain, pale background.

She had ordered two. Everybody in Hollin Street knew she had ordered two, because she had told the whole queue on Saturday, boasting that Mr Rafferty's tinned rings would never do for the Coronation tea. Now there were six, and a note in a hand she didn't recognise: Made a mistake at the depot. Keep the lot, with our apologies. Walter, who had worked the wholesaler's loading bay for thirty years, had been sacked on Thursday, and the note had the look of something written by someone who knew it.

She cut the first one open at the sink as the window greyed over the chimney pots. The flesh was pale gold and the smell rose up sweet and sharp enough to make her eyes water. She sliced the rings thin, pressed each one into a tin of brown sugar, and laid them on the top of a sponge that had been sitting on the cooling rack since midnight.

By seven the shop was full of people wanting to know what the smell was. She gave each of them a slice on a square of greaseproof paper, and by the time the sun came over the roofs, Walter himself was standing in the doorway with his cap in his hands, not quite coming in.
