Small pineapple outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small pineapple is drawn in a single black outline with a crosshatched body and a spiky crown of leaves. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink sits on the inner ankle. The plain skin and rolled blue denim cuff form a neutral background that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The snow shut the pass on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the inn at Scarth Gap held eleven people who had not planned to stay. Marta kept the kitchen and her temper in equal measure. She had salt cod, barley and sour cheese from the cellar, and the children had started crying at the wind.

On the Friday a carter came in out of the white, stamping, with a crate strapped to his back. Inside, packed in straw, was a pineapple he had paid more than a month's wages for in the port. He was taking it to a widow in the valley who had once fed him as a boy. He could not get through. He set the crate on the table and looked at the faces round the fire, and nobody spoke.

Marta cut it with her good knife. The skin was netted like the scales of a fish, and the crown stood up green and stiff as a cockerel's comb. She gave each of the eleven a slice thin enough to see the fire through. The children had never tasted anything so sweet. The carter ate his last piece slowly, then said the widow would never taste it now, for she had died at Michaelmas.

In the morning the pass was open. The carter left before dawn with the crown wrapped in a cloth. Marta found a note pencilled on the crate lid: Give it to whoever is at the table. She nailed the empty crate above the kitchen hearth, and for years, whenever snow closed the gap, she set a place for a stranger.
