Maud Tennant came to the writing table at the back of the chandler's shop with her husband's words folded inside her glove, and set them down in front of Wills as if they might spill. He was fourteen and had the only neat hand in Saltcombe, so the job fell to him. She had no paper of her own, so he gave her the good sheet the vicar's clerk had left behind.

Tell him dream without fear, she said, staring at the lamp rather than at him. He has always been a frightened man, and the sea makes it worse. Wills wrote it out slowly, joining the letters the way the schoolmaster liked, the d looping back on itself like a rope coiled on a deck. Then she was quiet for a long while, and when she spoke again her voice had gone thin. Put love without limits, and put the capital L. He will want to see that it was meant.
The letter went out on the Thursday tide aboard the Marigold, bound for the timber ports of the Baltic. Wills heard nothing for a year, and then nothing again, and he stopped wondering about it the way a boy stops wondering about most things he cannot change.
Then, the week before the autumn fair, Maud came back with a fresh sheet and asked him to write the two lines again, because the first had gone soft in the damp of her apron pocket. He wrote them out just as before. She pinned the paper above her kitchen door where the lamp could reach it, paid him two pennies, and never said whether the man it was meant for had ever read it.
