Look famous, be legendary, appear complex, act easy, radiate presence, travel light, seem a dream, prove real. You wrote it at the kitchen table the night before the coach to Malaga, in that biro that slants like it's running for a bus, and then you looked at me across the teapot and said that was the whole job, nothing else to it.

Me, I've been doing it on the 14 bus. Forty minutes into town with my shoulders up round my ears, trying to look like a woman who has an appointment she's already decided not to keep. Travel light has been the hardest. I keep bringing the whole flat with me, the corner shop bags, the phone charger, Mum's brooch in case. Mrs Okafor on the ninth floor says I look like I'm about to be asked for my ticket, and I said good, let them ask.

Last Thursday the lift was out again, so I walked up eleven flights with a wardrobe box and got to the landing shaking. The door of 47 was open and the lad from upstairs was playing his guitar badly, and I thought, well, nobody here is going to remember any of this in a year. Which I suppose is the point, is it?

I've left the list where it is. When you ring on Sunday I'll tell you the one I've managed, which is the last line. I proved real to a man at the bins this morning, and he said, you're the one with the box. That'll do.
