Dreamcatcher and feathers on a wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher hangs from two shaded feathers, with a small flock of birds drifting away to the left and the word Dream in flowing script to the right. The feathers have soft grey shading and fine detail, while the dreamcatcher web and script are drawn in solid black line. The skin is pale and the image is lit evenly against a silver background, with the design centred on the wrist.

Dear Nell,

The feathers came from a pair of wood pigeons that roosted in the ash behind our old wash-house. Your grandfather swore they were the bravest birds on Harrow Lane because they never once flew off when the coal lorry reversed. I plucked them myself the spring he proposed, the way he taught me, and kept them in a biscuit tin until I found the right hoop. Forgive the mess of string in the hallway. I wanted the web tight enough to catch a whole evening's worth of nonsense.
The night before my own wedding, my mother hung one above the bed and told me the bad dreams would stick in the knots while the good ones slid through the middle to me. I didn't believe a word of it. I believe a bit more now, mostly because I have been awake at four in the morning for forty-one years, counting.
So here is what I want you to do tomorrow. Take the little one from the top drawer, the one with the silver thread, and tie it to your bouquet before the bridesmaids line up. On the path out of the church, look up at the lych gate. You will see the sparrows lift off the roof like a handful of thrown seed, and the whole street will look at them instead of you for a second. Let them go, love. That is the whole trick.
Love, Gran
