Dreamcatcher and rose on the thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher hangs from a shaded rose at the top of the design, with a circular hoop, a central bead and fine radiating threads. Three shaded feathers and beads dangle from cords below the hoop. The linework is fine and the feathers and rose are softly shaded in grey, set against pale skin with a dark sleeve and a hand at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell found the hoop on the windowsill of number four the morning after Mr Orme left, wedged between a cracked saucer and the damp fold of his last bill. Someone had bent a length of willow into a ring and bound it with waxed thread, then strung it with a web of cotton so fine she had to tilt her head to see it catch the light. A pale rose, cut from her aunt's yard, hung from one side with its stem wrapped in green wool.

Aunt Maud said the lodger had been a fisherman's widower from Grimsby who came every March to stare at the water and never once went down to it. He paid in coins that were warm from his pocket. Nell had only spoken to him twice, both times on the stairs, both times about the weather.

She hung the hoop above her own bed that night because the room smelled of mildew and the thread looked like something that might keep the gulls off the glass. The wind came in off the promenade and the web trembled without breaking. She lay awake listening to the sea drag at the shingle, counting the three feathers that swung from their cords like bells that had forgotten their tune.

In the morning one feather lay on the boards by the door, grey and soft as ash. Nell picked it up, then looked at the hoop, which still held its web in perfect rings, and understood he had not left her something to catch. He had left her a way of letting things go.
