The big top came down on Tuesday, and Mr Harrow sold Duchess to a farm outside Carlisle, so you can stop asking whether she is still eating. She is. The rest of us are sleeping in the wagons until the spring, and the ring boards are stacked in the field behind the winter quarters like something left out in the rain.

Harrow asked me to take the strongbox to the bank in Ludlow before the auction men came. Under the cash tin and a bundle of old handbills with my name spelt wrong, I found the small trunk key Ada always swore she had lost. It is silver, worked into a curl at the bow, the sort of key you would hang on a chain to stop it going astray. The chain is thin and it knocks against the top of my ribs when I walk, and I find I like the small ache of it.

The trunk held the route books. Every town the show ever played is there, dates in Ada's slanting hand, and on the last page she had written "next" at the bottom and left the line empty. I sat on the kerb outside the bank for an hour reading them, ticking off places I had only ever seen through the flap of a caravan.

I have bought a coach ticket for Thursday, north and then west, to wherever the road stops being a road. Keep the route books for me. Tell Duchess I went where the ink runs out, and that the key is in good hands, which is more than it ever got in the strongbox.
