Dreamcatcher, moon and rose on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a web of fine lines and small coloured beads sits inside a crescent moon shaded in grey. A red and purple rose with green-grey leaves overlaps the left side of the moon, and three feathers with beads hang from the bottom. The bold outlines and smooth shading are set against bare skin, with a blurred indoor background.

Nell, the rose you posted came through the mail squashed flat as a pressed flower in a Bible, but the red is still sitting in the petals, so I have pinned it to the cork board by the logbook where I can see it from the stool.

The dreamcatcher hangs where Mam hung it, from the brass hook above the lens housing. You will remember she made it from a willow hoop and string dyed the colour of wet slate, and that the three feathers at the bottom came off the gulls that fought over the bins at the harbour. I have kept the beads on it, the little blue ones and the purple glass one that always catches the lamp. On a clear night the crescent of the moon sits just outside the web, and I swear its grey shading is the same grey as the rock below us in the weather.
Last Tuesday the glass wept sea spray for six hours and the wind got under the gallery rail. Around three in the morning the beam swung across the web and threw its shadow onto the floor in a star, and I stood there with the oil can in my hand and watched it turn, the way a man watches a thing he cannot fix. The boat that was out past the Hollow Reef answered our flash at four. Every one of her crew came home, and the log says so in my own neat hand.
So I sleep in the afternoons now, with the blind half down and the rose on the cork, and I dream of nothing much. Mam would say that is the proper use of a dreamcatcher. Write soon, and tell me whether the lamp in Ferrier's Bay still has its old green shade.
