Droid with roses on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A rounded white and orange droid with a single antenna sits at the centre, resembling BB-8 from Star Wars. Two large pink roses and a smaller pink flower with a yellow centre, along with green leaves, frame the droid at the bottom and right. A teal cloud shape and small pink diamonds sit behind it on the left. Bold black outlines, smooth shading and saturated red, orange, pink and teal ink give it a classic bold look.

The thing came up Hollin Lane on the Tuesday after the hay was cut, rolling on its own round belly like a dropped apple that had made up its mind. I was at the gate with the shears. It stopped a yard off and looked at me with one red eye, then the other, as if it had been told to count us.

Nobody in Marsh End had ever seen a machine that could roll uphill. Mrs Ambrose said it came from the air base over Crane Moor, her husband said it came down with the weather, and the vicar said it was neither and asked it to keep out of the churchyard. It did not keep out of anything. It went along the hedgerows instead, chirping in short bursts, pressing its white dome against the briars until the wild roses came away in pink spills. It tucked the blooms under its head, where they stayed.
Every evening it rolled into the edge of Hollin Wood, where the teal mist lay low over the bog like a sheet that had been folded and forgotten. There it set the roses down in a ring around the stump of the old oak. I followed it once. It turned on its base, rocked, and beeped at me in a voice like a kettle considering whether to boil.
The following spring the stump split, and roses came up through the moss in a ring of red and pink, their leaves as dark as the droid's shadow on the path. The thing never came back down Hollin Lane. I still take the shears up to the wood each June and leave one cut rose on the stump. By morning it has always gone, and the ring is a little wider.
