The wolves came down to the lock at Haddon Cut the week the ice went out, and Marjorie Quill watched them from the stern of the Perseverance with a cup of tea going cold in her hands. There were eight of them by her count, though they moved so much along the towpath that she kept losing one behind the willows. The grey-backed leader sat on the lock beam and stared at the water as if it owed him money.

Her husband had always said the wolves had left the Midlands a hundred years back, and that anything with a tail on the canal was a fox with ambitions. Walter was three weeks in the ground now, and the barge was hers, and so were the wolves, it seemed. She counted them off on her fingers the way he used to count locks: one howling on the bank, one sitting like a dog that had been good, one stretching his back against the bollard, one walking the rail as if he owned the place.

On the fourth morning the leader crossed the lock gate and stood beside her boat, close enough that she could smell wet fur and coal smoke. He did not growl. He simply turned and loped back the way he had come, and the others rose one by one and followed him into the mist. Marjorie untied the mooring rope, found the tiller still warm from the sun, and let the Perseverance drift out toward the open cut, where the water ran clear and the road to Nottingham was waiting for her.
