Nobody in Harrowgate Vale could agree on who had first called the grey cat Princess, but by the year the roof fell in on the old keep, she had grown too proud to answer to anything else. She sat on the broken parapet every evening, tail curled round her feet, watching the road for the carter who brought the miller's flour up the valley.

The miller's boy, Tam, was the only one she let near her. He carried her across the wet stones inside his coat and fed her scraps of mutton, and in return she brought him whatever she caught in the ruins: a shrew, a vole, once a silver ring that had rolled under the chapel door three hundred years before. He kept the ring in a tin under his bed and never told his mother where it came from.

When the lord's men came up the valley that winter to take the last of the timber for their own hall, Tam ran to the keep with his heart in his throat. He found the cat sitting in the doorway, unmoving, and beside her the men's boot prints frozen in the mud, leading in a tight ring round the well. The men wandered in circles until dark, and by morning they had gone home, swearing the place was bewitched.

Each spring after that, a small round paw print appeared pressed into the mortar above the keep door, with a spiral curling out from its heel and a little heart cut into its centre. The miller's wife swore it was the Princess marking her land, and nobody in the vale was ever foolish enough to argue with her.
