Paw print flash sheet, sixteen designs

Dotwork · Mixed · Flash

The sheet shows sixteen variations of an animal paw print, each with four toe pads above a main pad. The designs range from solid black silhouettes and bold outlines to stippled dotwork, tribal patterns, and paws with blue, red, pink, green and rainbow fills. Most are set on plain white with clean, even linework, and a few show splatter or a whiskered nose.

Ines had counted the prints twice before she believed them. Four toes above a main pad, pressed into the frost on the cargo apron at the far lane, and every one of them heading the same way, toward the lorry with the Polish plates. Behind her the floodlights hummed. Nobody had let a dog off the ramp tonight.

Colm crouched with his torch flat to the ground, the way they had been taught at Folkestone. He said it was a cat, a big one, and pointed at the splay of the toes without touching them. Some prints were crisp and black as tar. Others had a dusting in the centre, as if someone had pressed a sponge of salt into the pad. One set was so faint it might have been a fox, or a child in socks, or nothing at all.

The trail led past the fence, where the wire had been cut and bent back like a page. It changed as it went. In the mud by the drainage ditch the pads softened at the edges until they were almost blurred. By the hedge they were outlines only, hollow in the middle, as though the animal had walked across clean paper.

At the old brick wall the tracks stopped. Ines swept the torch up and found a crate lid propped open, straw inside, and beside it a tin of sardines with its key still curled in the lid. She laughed, which surprised her. Colm was already filling in the form, pen moving steadily. Ghost cat, he said, and wrote it down as a dog.
