Elephant tattoo flash collage

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Flash

The image is a collage of black line-art elephant designs, including a mandala-patterned elephant, a solid origami-style elephant, and simple outline elephants of varying sizes. Three panels show the designs as paper cut-outs or on a grass background, and one panel shows a lower leg above navy loafers covered in small elephant designs. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the only colour comes from the navy shoes and green grass.

Dear Ted, the crate arrived on Tuesday with nineteen elephants in it, which is eleven more than the invoice says, and I have counted them four times to be sure. Mr Pennant says they are sample sheets for the new season and we are not to sell them by the sheet, only as single animals, which is hardly a sensible way to run a stationery counter.

The mandala one is the trouble. It sits at the top of the pile looking like a dinner plate that has been told a secret, petals fanned out behind the big ear, and every morning it has turned a quarter further toward the window. The origami one I have had to keep under a paperweight, because it kept folding its trunk into a little hook whenever I looked away. The mother and calf in the corner keep swapping places overnight. I have stopped taking it personally.

On Thursday a girl from the shoe shop next door came in asking for a pencil and left with two outline elephants on a card, which I thought was the end of it. Then on Friday the displays were moved, and I found the smallest elephant stuck to the toe of a navy suede loafer in the shop window, facing out, as proud as you like. Nobody can tell me who put it there. The shoe shop says they have never stocked a stationery elephant in their lives.

I have written the count in the ledger as nineteen, with a note that one is out on loan to footwear. If you come up at Easter, bring your good pencils, and tell Mother I have not eaten the biscuits meant for the trunk. Yours, Cyril.
