Black and grey · Flash
A design sheet of temporary tattoo motifs showing a large ornate elephant head with hanging drop ornaments, several medium elephants and a row of tiny elephants along the bottom. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dalia's grandmother kept the only elephant on Mirrin Island, and she kept it mostly in her head. It was old and grey, with a face painted like lace and little black beads hanging from its ears, and every spring it walked out into the sea when the reef showed its back. The fishermen said it had carried the first families across from the mainland, one child at a time, and that the children it carried became the small elephants that followed it in a line.

Dalia did not believe this until the year the tide came in early and her brother, Sefu, was caught on the sandbar with the boat's rope wound around his ankle. The water reached his chest. Nobody could get to him. Dalia ran to the old shrine at the headland, where the stone elephant had worn smooth from being touched, and she pressed her palms to its trunk and said his name three times, the way her grandmother had taught her.
When she looked up, the water had drawn back a stride, and there on the sand stood a grey elephant as tall as the boathouse, its ears spread with the ornaments from the story and sea water running off its beads. It knelt. Sefu climbed its trunk and then its shoulder, and it rose and walked him to the shore without once looking back, a line of small elephants trailing behind it through the shallows like a row of stitches.
Sefu swore the great elephant had winked at him. Dalia did not argue. Every spring after that she walked the reef with a tin of wet paint and a brush and painted the same face on the boathouse wall, lace and beads and all, so that anyone crossing at low water would know who to thank. The paint has faded twice since. She still goes out with the brush.
