Enso circle on the inner forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single enso circle, a hand-drawn ring with a thick, tapering stroke, sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The ink shows soft shading with darker strokes at the start and fade at the end, and the open centre is left as bare skin. The tattoo is in grey-black ink against pale skin, photographed close up on a dark background.

Sit where the cold can't reach you, and mind the bucket. Old Hosking came up the stair the winter the Lady Ellen went onto the Scarrow, and he carried a pot of ink and one brush no longer than a finger, because he said a man ought to be able to draw his sorrow in one go or not at all.

He would not paint the lamp room. The keepers before him had daubed white rings round the glass to mark the hours, and Hosking called that vanity. Instead he knelt on the gallery in the wind, dipped the brush, and drew a circle on the iron rail with a single pull of the wrist. The first stroke was heavy and dragged dark at the start, and he lifted before he closed it, so there was a gap the width of a thumb. Every night after that he drew another, and every morning the salt took them.
The men from the mainland said he was mad, and the widow who brought the coal boat said he was getting his sums wrong. But the boy who rowed out with the post, Tam Pascoe, stood at the rail one evening and watched the beam turn through its great lens. He saw the light go round and round and never once close on itself. "That's it," Hosking said. "You leave the middle open. Something has to be able to come in."
When Tam finally asked what the gap was for, the old man only shrugged and pulled the cork from the ink. "Let the sea have what it wants," he said, "and draw the rest in one breath." Then he lit the lamp, and the beam swept out over the water, and the circle on the rail went bright as a coin for a moment before the dark took it back.
