The snow had buried the lower windows of the Drover's Rest by the time Mags Tolliver set down her pipe and told us about the eye. Nobody had asked for a story. We had asked for the ale to be warmer. She told it anyway, the way she told everything, with her chin up and her eyes on the fire as though it were the only listener worth her breath.

Elena Varley, she said, kept the lamp at the Stone Ferry crossing when her husband drowned in the spring flood. The river took his boat and most of the willows, and it left her a ledger, a wick cutter and a bronze-rimmed glass the size of a dinner plate. The glass was for seeing boats in fog. Turn it, and the ring of brass drew the far bank in close enough to count the rivets. Men came from three parishes to borrow it. None of them ever paid, and none of them ever gave it back without a story attached.

One November a pedlar came off the moor road with a cart of tin and a bad cough, and he wanted the glass for a bet. Elena lent it to him on one condition: he had to look through it at the lamp and say aloud what he saw there. He squinted, went pale, and told her the lamp had a second flame behind it, small and blue, burning in the shape of a door. Elena nodded, banked her fire, and said that was the flame her husband had lit the night he drowned, and it had been waiting for someone to finally look straight at it.

The pedlar left before dawn. The glass stayed on the sill. Mags leaned back and let the fire settle. That's the whole of it, she said. Take your ale, and mind the ring when you turn it.
