Eye tattoo on the palm
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A open eye with long lashes is tattooed on the inside of a palm, with the fingers spread upwards. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading across the iris and lid and small dots of stippling around the lashes and edges. The ink is entirely black and grey against the skin, and the eye sits near the centre of the palm with the background a plain indoor room.

The keeper's daughter at Scarrow Head was the one who saw the ship the night the lamp went out. Her father had been poorly since the spring, the oil was nearly gone, and she climbed the iron stair with a tin of paraffin and a sour feeling in her stomach.

The wick would not catch. In the lamp room she found the old brass housing that her grandmother had called the watcher, the great lens set in a ring of black metal that her father had sworn never to touch. The cold glass was dull with salt. She pressed her palm flat against it, the way you would test a stove, and the light came up through her hand, through every line of her skin, and went out across the water as a single open eye that did not blink.
The ship turned. Men in the lifeboat said afterwards that they saw the eye lying on the dark like a lamp with lashes, and they steered by it until the rocks fell away on either side. The keeper's daughter kept her hand on the glass until the sky grew grey. When she lifted it, the light had settled into the skin of her palm as fine dark lines, the lashes curling at the edges and a grey shadow across the lid where the heat had been.
Her father, sitting up in bed that morning, asked what she had done. She held out her hand and said nothing. After that she kept the lamp lit each night with her palm on the glass, and the fishermen of Scarrow still say that if you come in from the sea at the right hour you can see an eye on the headland, half shut, waiting for you to get home.
