Faith script and arrow on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of the word Faith in flowing script, with a thin arrow passing through the lettering so the shaft extends to the right and the head sits at the left. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading and no colour. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a blurred background of a dark sleeve, a red surface and a floor.

You have carried the same bundle of ash shafts up the north stair every morning since the clerk died, because nobody else in Harrowgate Keep can keep a straight line over the gorge. He lettered each shaft himself, one word curling along the wood just ahead of the fletching, and the ink was always a little too thin in the damp. Faith, he wrote, and then he made you promise you would never loose an arrow without it.

The far bank is the chapel ruin at Wennick, where the monks left their bells and a family of herons. For nine winters you have shot one arrow at dawn into the mist. Nothing has ever come back over the water except the wind, and the boys in the lower bailey have started calling it the sulking shot, because a lord who will not send letters can at least send wood.
This morning the mist was thin and the shaft flew long and quiet, its head dipping toward the far bank the way the clerk always said it should. You watched it drop into the reeds below the chapel wall. You did not expect an answer, so the knocking took a while to register: three slow taps against stone, a pause, then three more.
By noon a boy had waded across with a rope, and tied to his waist was a single shaft, its fletching chewed by weather, the word on its length written in a hand you did not know. Beneath it someone had scratched a second line into the wood, Yes, I keep it too. You stood on the north wall until the mist burned off and you could see the other tower clearly for the first time in years.
