Fine line black script reading faith running along a woman's forearm while she sits on grass with her arm bent.

Faith script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a woman's bare forearm, with the word faith written in a thin, flowing black script running diagonally up the arm. The linework is fine and even, with a slight variation in stroke weight, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The background is green grass and the subject wears a white top and ripped blue jeans, with her face outside the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias Wren had signwritten every shopfront on Pannier Row for thirty-one years, and he had never once let his apprentice start a word at the bottom of a board. Eli Sayer kept doing it anyway, letting his capitals sit flat as loaves on a shelf, and every morning Tobias would scrape the glass clean with the side of his thumb and tell him to lift the line.

The rain came sideways off the market that Thursday, drumming on the fish stalls' awnings and running in brown rivers over the cobbles. Mrs Ada Corrigan wanted a sign for the window of her wool shop, one word only, and she would not say what it was until Tobias had the brush loaded. 'Faith,' she said at last, 'and don't you dare make it look like a bank.'

So he drew it out in one long run, the stroke rising from the bottom corner and climbing the pane like bindweed finding a fence, the hairlines thinning where the brush lifted and the downstrokes pressing heavier where it held. Eli held the umbrella over the glass and watched the paint take the light. When Tobias finished, the rain had stopped, and the word leaned up toward the grey gap in the clouds as if it had been waiting there all along.

Mrs Corrigan read it twice and paid in coins warm from her apron pocket. 'Why's it slope like that?' Eli asked when she had gone. Tobias wiped his brush and said nothing. Eli looked at the window, then at his own hand resting on the wet board, and began, very carefully, to lift.
