Family script and heart on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held up with a small tattoo on one finger reading the word family in thin, joined black script, followed by an outlined heart. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The ink is the only colour, set against a soft, pale, textured background with the hand in the foreground.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the wasps, they're drunk on the windfalls this week. Leave the bucket where it is. I'll tell it while Ada finishes the grafting, because that's where the story lives, in the join.

Old Tom Harker had two pear trees at the top of the Coldharbour orchard, a Conference and a Williams, and they'd quarrelled since the hard frost of '47. Every March he shaved a sliver from one and bound it to the other, tongue to tongue, with raffia soaked in beeswax. The Williams sulked. The Conference wept sap for a month. Then one August the joined limb bore fruit that neither tree could have managed alone, sweet and freckled with russet, and Tom's wife said that was a fine lesson about families and he was never to tell the vicar she'd said so.
When Tom died, his daughter Nell walked up the lane with his grafting knife in her apron pocket and a letter in his square capitals. It said only: cut them apart if you must, but do it at the join, and keep the scar. Nell read it twice by the gate, then went in and sat under the trees until the light went orange on the bark. She didn't cut them. She went up with the raffia every March, the same as he had.
That's all there is to it. Go on, take a windfall. Mind the bruise on the side, that's where it's sweetest, same as anywhere.
