Family script and heart on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a white textured blanket, with a thin script tattoo of the word family and a small outlined heart on the side of one finger. The linework is delicate and even, in a single dark ink with no shading. The soft, close framing keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

The word came up on the salvage slate with its little hook of ink still attached, and the scanner had tagged it as noise. Dr Ilse Marrow would have wiped it, but I had the night watch at the Ossory Reach archive and nobody else was awake to argue.

Nobody aboard had used the word in four generations. We said crew, or berth-mates, or simply the manifest. Ilse once told me the old ships buried their dead in the stern as though that were a kindness. I traced the looped f with my stylus and tried to make the letters mean something. The heart sat beside the final letter like a wax seal on an envelope nobody had opened.
The file behind it was a tally of forty-two names, each followed by the same word in a quick, sloping hand, and one line at the bottom that read: held in common. Forty-two people had counted themselves as one household, and somewhere in the hold of the old vessel they had decided the word was worth the ink.
I copied it onto the duty log in pen, under my own name, because the terminal would not let me draw a heart. Then I sealed the slate and walked the long corridor to wake the sleepers in the east berths, who would need to hear that the old word had been found, and that it had belonged to us all along.
