Fine line black script reading family with a small heart, tattooed along the side of a finger on a hand resting on a fluffy white blanket.

Family script with heart on finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a cream fleece-style blanket with the side of one finger showing a small black tattoo of the word family in cursive script, with a simple open heart outline at the end. The linework is thin and even, and the ink appears dark and crisp against the skin. The tattoo sits centred on the finger, with the rest of the hand and the soft textured fabric filling the frame.

Your father addressed the envelope again this morning, and he got the postcode wrong, so I've copied it out neatly in pencil and told him he's no good with numbers. Don't mind him. He's been stood at the hall table since seven, trying to find a card with the right amount of glitter, and he says he can't tell the difference any more. I think he misses the sound of you on the stairs.

The word on the back of the card is the one I drew myself. Mrs Okafor at the post office says the loops look like a child's, and she's probably right, but a child is who your nan was when she learnt her letters, and I've trusted that hand ever since. I went over each stroke three times with the good fountain pen, until the ink sat dark in the paper and wouldn't rub off on my sleeve. The heart at the end took longest. I kept closing it up and opening it again.

The cream blanket you left behind is folded on the end of the settee. I washed it in the bath on Sunday because the machine finished the last one, and it still smells faintly of the cedar cupboard in the spare room. Wrap yourself in it when you read this and tell me whether it's as warm as I remember. Your grandad bought it from a stall in Whitby the summer we first got engaged, and he swore it was pure wool, though it's clearly half wool and half hope.

Come home at Easter. The kettle's been descaled and the spare bed is made up with the good sheets, and your father has promised to behave. Love, Nan.
