The snow had shut the Hollin Pass by four o'clock, and Mrs Greaves was still at the kitchen hatch counting candles when the knocking started. Father said nobody sane walked the moor road in February, so we left the bolt across and listened to the knocking go on for an hour.

At last he lifted the bar. A carrier stood on the step with a grey mare behind him, her breath smoking in the lamplight, and a satchel of letters buttoned under his coat. He had a wooden box no bigger than a loaf, and he would not let it out of his hands. 'It's for the Fell-end house,' he said. 'I was told to give it to whoever keeps the light burning.'

No one had kept a light in the Fell-end house since the shepherd's wife died. But the carrier would not sit by the fire until the box was opened, and inside, folded on blue paper, was a card with one word in looping ink, the letters so faint they looked like frost on a pane: Fearless. Beneath it, in a hand Father knew from the parish register, was his mother's writing: Light the window anyway.

We set a lamp in the Fell-end window that night, and the mare stood steaming in our yard while the snow kept falling. By morning the carrier was gone, the box was empty, and a path had been trodden through the drifts to the old house. Father never told me what he found there. He only said the word twice more before breakfast, as if testing how it sat in his mouth.
