Fearless in script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the single word fearless written in flowing black cursive script on a plain white background. The linework is smooth and even, with long looping ascenders and a tapered, connected stroke. It is a monochrome design with no shading, and the word is centred with generous white space around it.

The snow had covered the lower step by four o'clock, and I was still at the bar polishing the same glass when the last guest came stamping in with a dead torch and a suitcase tied with string. He said his name was Tobias Vane and that the road over Hollin Fell had closed behind him. I gave him the room over the kitchen because it was the only one with a fire that drew properly, and because he had the look of a man who would rather be cold than asked questions.

He came down at nine and asked for paper. I had a pad of the inn's cream notepaper with a faded blue crest, and I watched him write without lifting the pen much, the letters running into one another like water finding its level. When he finished he folded the sheet twice and slid it across the bar with one finger, the way you pass over a coin you would rather nobody saw.
"For the post," he said. "If the road opens."
It was one word, written large across the page, the long strokes of the f and the l swinging out over the lines below. Fearless. Nothing else. I turned it over looking for the rest, and he said it was all the letter needed, that his sister would understand, and that she had been frightened of most things since their mother died.
The road opened on Thursday. Tobias left before the plough came through, and the envelope went out with the morning post, addressed in capitals to a house in Kendal. I have thought about it since, that one word and a man who could not manage a second. Some letters run to pages. Others are a single stroke of nerve, folded small enough to carry.
