The winter the Severn came over the towpath at Upton, my mother was boat-bound with three of us and a load of coal, and the lock gates wouldn't hold. Nobody would take a barge past the weir that week. Her cabin side had a word painted on it, flaking, her own father's work, and every morning she ran her thumb along the first letter like it was a rail. Fearless, it said. Not a promise, she used to say. A direction.

So she took us down on the third morning, the water brown and quick as a runaway dog. The rudder went slack under her hands at the willows, and I thought we were finished. She didn't shout. She leaned on the tiller and let the current carry the long slow curve of us, the way your eye follows a line of writing, down and out and round, until the water flattened and we slid into the still pool below the mill.

Mind, I can't tell you what became of the rope or the coal. Some things you don't need to know. What I know is that current, and it's still there in the paint, if you look close, where the word runs off the end of the boat and keeps on going.
