The jay came back to the beech wood on Tuesday, the same bird that used to scold us from the stile when we were small enough to be frightened of it. Father would have said it meant rain. I told him it meant you, because you always said jays were the only honest thing in the parish, and he laughed the short way he does now, like a door shutting in another room.

Mr Hollis has the cart again and says the road to the mill town is dry as far as Abbot's Ford. I have been sorting your things into two piles, the ones you will want and the ones you will say to burn. The yellow shawl is in the first pile. The quill box is in the second, though I could not bring myself to put the penknife in with the rest, so it has stayed in my apron pocket since Sunday.

I found a feather under the window ledge this morning, grey at the root and a pale lilac where the light comes through it. I have pressed it between these pages so it will not blow off on the walk to the post. Write back and tell me what city light does to a feather.
