Fine line black tattoo of radiating lines and dots fanning out from a small central circle across the palm of a hand.

Radiating line sunburst on palm

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A palm is shown against a dark background, with black ink lines radiating from a small open circle near the centre of the hand. Some lines end in single dots, and a longer vertical line runs up the palm towards the middle finger, with a separate dot on the base of the ring finger. The linework is thin and even, and the image uses only black ink with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Sefa said the hand was a map that had been drawn backwards, and that was why it was so hard to read. You learned it the way the old navigators learned the stars, by counting from the centre outward. The small open ring at the heart was the harbour, and every line running out from it was a road that someone had walked once and never walked back. The long line that climbed toward the middle finger was the road to the Gantry, where the lift cables still hummed when the wind came off the salt flats. The dots were the places where the roads ended in towns nobody had bothered to name.

On the morning the water tanks cracked, Ruvan came to the square with his palm open and said he could not find the road to the eastern wells. Sefa took his wrist and turned it under the lamp. She traced the fourth line out to its dot and then past it, saying the dot was only where the ink stopped, not where the land did. Ruvan said that did not help a man who was thirsty. She agreed. Then she made him count the lines again, slowly, from the ring, and on the eleventh count he laughed, because the line he had been ignoring all morning ran straight to a pump house the council had sealed years ago.

They went together at dusk, the two of them and a boy with a torch, and the seal had already split. The pump was dry, but the pipe beneath it was not, and the water came up brown and cold and smelling of iron. Ruvan knelt in it with both hands cupped and held them out to Sefa without speaking. She did not drink. She looked at the ring on his palm, the thin black circle that the whole map turned around, and she told him it was a good map, and that a map only ever showed you where to stand.
