Matching elephant tattoos on ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching elephant outlines sit on the ankles of two feet, one on each. The elephants are drawn in a single thin black line with a curled trunk and simple curved legs. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the black and white photograph shows the feet overlapping on a textured grey floor.

Dear Nell,

The ward is quiet tonight apart from bed nine, where Mr Okafor has been counting the ceiling tiles out loud since midnight. I've told him there are ninety-six, and he says the sister on days told him a hundred, so one of us is wrong and it's not going to be me. I've got my pen out and the kettle on the trolley, and I'm writing to you on the back of a drug chart because you always said you'd rather get a letter than a text, and I'm too tired to be anything but honest.
Dad's card came this morning. He's written "the elephants are on the move" again, as if we're still the girls who drew them in the margins of Gran's seed catalogue. I haven't forgotten the rule. You put your foot beside mine so the trunks lined up, and whoever walked first had to keep the other one in step. Walking behind someone with their trunk curled up at you, that's a sort of promise, you said. I was nine and thought you were showing off.
Your train goes from platform four tomorrow, and I'll be on the ward with my hands in the sink when it does. So here's the instruction I should have given you at the station: when you get to Glasgow and the flat smells of somebody else's cooking, stand in the kitchen and take two steps in a circle. That's me, coming round the corner. Then ring Mum before she decides you've been lost in the Clyde.
Bed nine has gone quiet. I think he's reached a hundred. Love you, you daft cow.
