Fine line cat on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single-line tattoo of a seated cat in profile, with pointed ears and a curled tail, is shown on the outside of a lower leg. The linework is thin, black and unshaded, with no fill or colour. The photo is taken from low down beside a red canvas trainer, with a beige carpet and a room interior in the background.

Come closer, the lamp is nearly out and the tale is long. In the kingdom of Ymmerloch, where the river Tallow runs backwards on Tuesdays, there lived a cat called Sorrel who belonged to nobody. She sat on the windowsill of the mill at Pelham Ford and watched the miller's daughter count coins in a tin, and she never once came down to ask for a fish.

One winter the river froze solid and the miller's daughter, Edda, walked out across it to fetch the doctor from the far bank. The ice spoke under her boots the way ice does, long groans like a door opening in another house. Halfway over, she stopped, because she had forgotten which way was home. Sorrel was there on the ice, sitting in a neat line of black, tail curled round her paws, looking at Edda as though the answer were obvious.
Edda followed that thin dark shape the whole way, step by careful step, never looking down. When she reached the bank the cat was gone, and the doctor came back with her, and that was the end of the frost. The miller's daughter kept the tin of coins in the same place for sixty years and never once counted them again. Now, close the shutter. Sorrel is still out there on the ice, and if you listen you can hear her tail whisking the snow.
