Fine line cat with spiral tail
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line drawing of a cat stretched out low, with its head resting on the left and a long tail that curls into a spiral at the top. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design sits on a plain, lightly lit area of skin with the subject centred in the frame.

Mind the gap, my dear, and mind the cat that lives under the bench at Thornley Junction, for she has been waiting there longer than the timetable has. Her name was Mab, or so the porter said, and she belonged to nobody but the 4.12 to Carlisle, which she boarded every afternoon and got off again at the next stop without anyone seeing her do it.

Now the stationmaster, a grumbling man called Eustace Pell, decided she was a nuisance and set a trap of cold mutton. Mab ate the mutton, washed her face, and stretched herself out along the warm iron rail the way a long thin line of ink might stretch across a page, nose on her paws, tail flicking up behind her. Eustace swore he could not get her to move for love or lard. The more he shooed, the more she curled that tail round into a tight coil, as if she were winding a clock that only she could read.
One wet Tuesday the 4.12 was late, and the platform emptied, and Eustace found himself alone with the cat and a dropped pocket watch. Mab leapt onto the rail, looked at him very hard, and tapped the watch with one paw until its hands read a minute to four. Then she gave one long look at the far line, and the train came sliding out of the fog exactly on time. Eustace never again set a trap, and the timetable, they say, has been a little kinder ever since.
