Sleeping cat with paw prints
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single cat is drawn in delicate black linework, with closed eyes, a small triangular nose and long whiskers. Its tail curls up and over its back, and two paw prints sit above the figure. The design uses thin, unshaded lines on a pale background, with the cat centred and the paw prints placed toward the top left and top right.

The prints begin on the back step of the bakery, small and damp on the flagstones, and you follow them because the night shift has been quiet and because someone has been stealing the day-old rolls from the crate for a week. Each print is pressed neatly, as if its owner were walking on tiptoe past the bins and the sleeping delivery van.

They lead you up Mill Row, over the wall by the chapel, and onto the flat roofs where the streetlamps give out. You pass a shuttered launderette, a bus shelter with a torn timetable, a line of washing stiff with frost. The last print sits on the lip of a chimney stack, and below it, curled on a folded tarpaulin, is a grey cat with its tail looped over its back like a question mark that has decided to rest.
You crouch beside it. Its eyes are shut, its whiskers pale against the dark slate. Down in the town a bin lorry grinds up the hill and a shutter rattles open, and you think of the till you have left unattended and the rolls going cold in their tray. You reach out to nudge it awake, then stop, because the cat's breathing is slow and even, and it seems to have been waiting for someone to notice how far it had come.
When you finally climb back down the drainpipe, there is a warm roll in your coat pocket that you did not put there. Above you the prints on the wet roof are already fading in the first grey light, but you know exactly where to go next time, and you are not sure whether you have been following the cat or it has been following you home.
