Fine line grass sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single slender grass stem with feathery seed heads is drawn in thin black linework on the inner forearm. The stem tapers to a long, fine line at the base, and the tiny leaves and spikelets are shaded with light stippling. The skin is pale and the composition is centred on the tattoo, with a dark sleeve and blurred background at the edges of the frame.

Dear Nell,

We pulled up on the common at Stourbridge last Tuesday, and the ground there is nothing but cinders and boot prints, the sort of place you'd think nothing would bother to grow. Yet along the edge of the dodgem pitch stood one stem of couch grass, straight as a hatpin, its seed heads fanned out like feathers. I snapped it off before Dad could tell me to leave it alone. It's pressed between the pages of the Radio Times now, under the Bible, if you can believe that.

The fair runs eleven weeks this year, all the way round the Midlands and up to Cumbria. Every morning I walk the length of the field before the generators start, counting tent pegs and trying to decide which of us is the stranger. The grass doesn't mind. It leans into the wind and stands back up after the lorries have rolled over it.

Mr Hollis from the coconut shy says it's a weed, and he's right, but he also said that about me in March. I've decided weeds are just plants that never asked permission. I've started keeping a stub of pencil in my apron pocket, and when the crowd thins out at dusk I sit on the back step of the waltzer and draw whatever's growing nearest my boot.

Keep the stem safe for me when you post the letter back. I want to see whether it still looks like anything once it's dry.

Love, Frances
