Fine line script word 'saved' on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the lowercase word 'saved' written in a single thin black fine line script across the skin. The linework is even and delicate, with a looping stroke on the final 'd' and no shading or fill. The background is a warm, dimly lit skin tone with dark vignetted edges, and the composition centres the lettering on the arm.

The lifeboat had been out since half past two, and by six the kettle in the Cullercoats boathouse had boiled dry twice. Nobody remarked on it. My mother kept her back to the door and wrote the names on the back of an old tide table in pencil so fine I had to hold it to the lamp: Tom Ridley, Billy Ridley, the Cairns boy whose surname she spelled two ways before settling on one.

The coble had gone over off the Snook, and the sea that night was the colour of wet slate, the kind that doesn't give back a single light. Dad's crew found the first two clinging to the upturned hull. The third had been carried further out, and it was nearly full dark before the searchlight picked up his orange jersey bobbing like a dropped buoy. I stood on the slipway with a flask nobody wanted and counted the lifebelts as they came in, one, two, three, because counting was something I could do with my hands.

When the boat nosed back through the harbour mouth, Billy Ridley was sitting on the gunwale wrapped in a blanket, laughing at something his brother had said. My mother watched him climb onto the slip. Then she turned the tide table over, unscrewed the pen, and wrote one more word beneath the names, in the same thin looping hand she used for birthday cards and bills. She blotted it on her sleeve and held it up to the lamp so I could read it.

It said saved. She pinned it to the board by the door, where the crews chalk the callouts, and the next morning it was still there under the rain-streaked glass, the only thing on the board that didn't need rubbing out.
