Three interlocking triangles on the back of a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of three interlocking triangles sits on the back of a hand. The lines are even and uniform, with no shading, and the figure is set near the centre of the hand. The background is dark, with a black leather jacket sleeve at the wrist.

Brother Anselm had been told that the figure could not be drawn in one stroke, so he set out to prove it wrong. Every morning in the scriptorium at Saint Ruan's he took a fresh sheet of vellum, ruled it with a hard point, and began at the nearest corner. The pen went up the hill, down the far side, and came back to where it started, but the three sides never closed the way the picture in his grandmother's psalter had shown them.

The abbot said the figure was older than the abbey and older than the river that turned its mill. He said the shepherds of the high moor scratched it on the lintels of their huts to keep the wolves off, and that each of its three triangles leaned on the next, so that none could fall without taking the others with it. Brother Anselm thought this a fine sermon and a poor answer to a question about ink.
In the winter of the great frost the ink thickened in its horn and he had to warm it against his chest. On the last night of the year he drew the figure once more, slowly, and found he had stopped trying to close it. He let the line run past the edge of the sheet and onto the table, where the dark oak had never been ruled. The shape came out whole. He sat looking at it until the bell for matins, and when the others came in and asked what he had made, he showed them, and not one of them could say which way the triangles were pointing.
