A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down, the 9:40 is late again and it'll be late till Christmas if the signal box has its way. You want the story of the gold hands? Right. When I was a lad on this platform, the porters signalled with their arms up, lamp in one fist and the other hand flat out, and the drivers read us like a book. Chevrons meant the down line, an arrow pointed to the bridge, and a little diamond warned of points that stuck in fog.

Then one November the station ran out of lamp oil, and Mrs Havers from the refreshment room, who could never sit still, rubbed gold transfers onto every porter's wrist. Her nephew had brought the sheets back from a fair in Brighton, and she said they'd do until the oil came. Nobody thought much of it. Then the fog came down thick as wool, the lamps failed one by one, and the only things the drivers could make out were those bright marks, lifted high above the platform edge and catching what little light there was.

Ruth Ashdown, who kept the lost property shelf, came down the steps that night with a bangle in each hand and a face like a shut door. She held her arms up beside ours, gold on gold, and the 9:40 crept in slow and sure, steered by a chevron on somebody's wrist that nobody had paid for. Afterwards nobody asked where the bangles came from. Some things a station keeps and never signs for.

So when the fog lies on the line, you'll still see the porters lift their hands. The gold wears off in a week, mind. It's the lifting that counts.
