Fine script lettering on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a lower leg and ankle showing a small, thin script tattoo in black ink, placed on the front of the ankle above the boot. The linework is fine and even, with the words written in a flowing cursive. The image is monochrome, with the trousers and lace-up heeled boots in soft greys against a dark floor.

Dear Ruth, the eight-fifteen from Market Harrow came in twenty minutes late again, so I have had time to finish this on the platform bench while Mr Pollard counts his parcels. You will laugh, but I still have chalk on my cuff from the hat shop, where Mrs Aske made me hold the pins for the whole of Tuesday.

Your brother came in on Thursday asking after the dance hall key. I told him the caretaker keeps it under the scorched tin on the back step, same as when we were girls, and that he should not go trying the lock in his good shoes. He did not thank me. He never does. But he did leave a shilling on the counter for the ribbon you wanted, so I have put it in the tin with the rest.

Here is the thing I meant to tell you at the station and did not. Mother found the letters from the Barrow boy in the hatbox. She read one aloud at the table, every word, in the voice she keeps for the vicar. Then she handed it back to me folded very small and said, "Write the next one in a hand that is easier to read, Pearl, or do not write at all." So I have. I have been practising a looping script since Sunday, copying words off the Co-op calendar, and this is the first I have got right. Look at the way the tails run out. It is nothing like my real hand, and that is rather the point.

I will post this before the last collection. Keep the ribbon for me. Yours in haste, Pearl
