Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple anchor outline in black ink sits on the inner side of an ankle, above a white trainer. The linework is thin and even, with the anchor shown as a solid silhouette with a ring at the top and a curved base. The black and white photograph shows two legs standing on a dark wooden floor, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Sit closer to the vent, the wind's come over the dome again and it likes to listen. You'll have heard of Kell's Reach, where the water went out in my grandmother's time and never came back. The town's last anchor hung on a nail above the harbour office, and nobody had seen it wet in eighty years.

It was no bigger than a thumb, black iron worn smooth by hands that wanted something to hold. Old Tobias Crane kept it there. He said a boat with nothing to hold her would drift off under the glass and be lost, and by the glass he meant the great curved roof that sealed the harbour from the sky. Ilse Varley was the rope-maker's granddaughter, and she had built a flat, ugly thing from scavenged hull plates and named it the Patience. She needed that anchor. She asked him for it every morning for a year, and every morning he said no.

On the last day of the dry season he took it down and wrapped it in a strip of sailcloth. "Mind the salt," he said. "It bites." She dragged the Patience across the cracked basin to the place where the quay used to drop into deep water, and she lowered the anchor over the side. The old chain rang against the dust like a bell, and the whole town heard it through the vents. Nobody spoke.

When the children came out at dawn they found the boat still there, the anchor sunk in the grey mud with its iron ring just showing above the surface like a small, stubborn moon. Ilse was asleep in the bow with her boots tied to the rail. Nobody moved it. The wind has been trying to shift it ever since, and it has not budged an inch.
