Fine script line tattoo on the foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a bare foot in a blue strappy sandal, with a small handwritten script tattoo in black ink running diagonally along the inner side of the foot towards the toes. The lettering is thin and even, with a light, slightly uneven hand, and the skin around it is smooth and evenly lit. The background is a pale stone floor, and the florally patterned trouser hem is visible at the top of the frame.

Outside, the gulls were quarrelling over the fish van. Inside, Mrs Okonkwo-Bell, who had run the shop for thirty years and never once let anyone touch the till without her, watched me over the top of her spectacles.

The phrase was short and French, and she had written it on the back of a bus ticket in pencil. I copied it four times before she was satisfied: once for the place card, once for the order of service, once for a folded slip to go inside the groom's shoe. The fourth attempt was the one she kept. Her brother, who was giving the speech, had asked for something thin enough to hide along the edge of a cuff, and she said the letters had to lean forward slightly, as if they were walking somewhere, because the words had never once stood still in her life.
On the wedding day I stayed at the back of the church with the spare pens and watched the ink dry on the cards. Nobody read them closely. When the bride came down the aisle and passed me the little slip to hold for her, her hand was steady, and she tucked it into her glove without looking at it, the way you put away something you already know by heart.
