Colour tattoo of a heart formed by a blue fish hook and a tan antler, with the word love in black script running through it.

Fish hook and antler heart with script love

Mixed · Photo

A heart is formed by a blue fish hook curving up from the lower left and a tan deer antler curving down from the upper right. The word love is written in black looping script across the lower left of the heart, with the hook's line passing through the lettering. The hook and antler are shaded with soft gradients and the script is drawn in clean black outline on smooth skin.

Dear Maureen,

I've put the hook back in my tackle box where you can't see it, because you'll only tell me to stop fiddling with it. It's the barbed one I bent on the Wyre last Sunday, with the blue whipping round the shank. I know you think I'm soft for keeping it, but I sat on that bank for four hours and the only thing that came up was the hook and a cold boot. So it's yours now, or it will be once I've worked out how to file the barb down without spoiling the bend.

Mr Kearsley found the antler on the top road, half buried under bracken, and gave it to me for nothing because he said it looked like a bit of the devil's hat. I carried it to the Palais on Saturday in my jacket pocket. You'll remember I can't dance, and you laughed when I tried to hold it out instead of asking you properly, so I set it on the table between the lemonade and your gloves.

You didn't pick it up straight away. You looked at the hook and the antler sitting either side of the gap and said they didn't fit together. I said that was the whole point. A hook needs something to catch, and a stag needs somewhere to rest its head, and I'd spent a month looking for the place where the two of them would meet.

I've written the word on the back of this page in my worst pencil, the way you wrote it on the programme. If you can make the curl of the L run into the line of the hook, I'll stop complaining about the band. Come down to the Palais on Saturday and we'll see whether they play anything slow enough for me to get it right.

Yours, Frank
