Fine line tattoo of a heart formed by two fishing hooks, one blue and one tan, with the word love in script on the upper chest.

Fishing hook heart with script love

Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A heart outline is formed by two fishing hooks, with the blue hook on the left and a tan hook on the right, both shaded to suggest depth. The word love is written in thin, flowing script beneath the heart, and the tattoo sits small and centred on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Sit down, sit down, the 4.12 is never on time and you've nowt else to do. Eleven years I kept the lost property cupboard at this station, and you learn what people leave behind. Mostly umbrellas. Once a bag of frozen mackerel, which I will not discuss.

One wet March a lad came off the Scarborough line with a tackle box split open at the hinge. He sorted through it on my counter, swearing soft under his breath, and out tumbled a loose heap of hooks. Two of them had knotted themselves through each other, one enamelled blue, the other brass gone the colour of stewed tea. He tugged and the barbs just dug in deeper. So he sat there, and I sat there, and the 4.12 went without us.

I told him to cut the line. He wouldn't. His nan taught him to tie those hooks, he said, and she'd turn in her grave if he left a knot undone. So he worked at it with a penknife and his tongue between his teeth, and when at last they came free they were bent into a curve, two hooks leaning into each other as if they'd been made that way. He held them up to the window light and laughed, then asked for a pen and a ticket stub.

He wrote something small on the back, pressed it into my hand, and walked out to catch the next train. The ledger still has the entry in my handwriting. Item: two hooks, one knot. Claimed by nobody, which is how I know they got where they were going.
