Floral henna-style design on a foot
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and ankle carry an intricate floral design of flowers, leaves, swirling vines and dots in dark brown ink, which resembles henna. The linework is fine and dense, with the pattern concentrated across the top of the foot and tapering toward the toes. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin on a plain brown background, and the toenails are painted red.

Dear Ada, the paste took three hours to dry on Saturday, so we sat on the cabin roof at Hythe Lock and let the river go past us. Mrs Pargeter came down the towpath with her tin of cones and her brass dish, and she would not let me look until she had finished. She works the way I imagine a lace-maker works, bent close, not breathing much, one dot after another. Vines first, along the top of the instep, then the little flowers opening as if they had been pressed in a book, then dots thick as lock-side gravel that thin out as they reach the toes.

Father always said a barge is a house that has forgotten it is a boat. Mrs Pargeter says a henna pattern is a garden that has forgotten it is only ink. She talked the whole time about her mother, who could fold a pattern from memory on a bad night and never once spoil a line. She had no mirror for it. She said the trick was to stop thinking about the shape and follow where the paste wanted to go.
When she wiped the cone clean I saw the design was not finished at all, only sleeping, because the brown would darken over two days. By Monday the flowers had gone the colour of strong tea and the vines looked as though they had grown there in the night. I keep thinking about that: a thing that is pale and wet on Saturday, and by Monday looks as if it always belonged. Come up in August and I will show you the new lettering on the bow, which I did myself, badly. Mind the third plank from the stern. Your loving sister, Nell.
