By the third day out from Tilbury the cat had walked through every bag of flour in the galley, and I had stopped swearing at her. She was a fat grey tabby called Pilot who had come aboard in Rotterdam and decided the cook was hers. Each morning I found her prints on the steel worktop, five toes and a pad, pressed as neatly as stamps on a card.

Then the weather turned. A swell came over the bow at four in the morning and tipped the pans off the range, and when I got down to the stores with a torch the flour had gone everywhere: up the ladder, into the strainer of the bilge pump, across a sack of sugar that was supposed to be sealed. Pilot sat on the lid of the flour bin looking entirely pleased with herself. I should have been cross. Instead I got out the piping bag and the last of the icing sugar and started drawing on the parchment, a daisy in the middle of each pad, little curls like the ones my nan put on the Christmas biscuits, a dot here and there for the wrinkles.

The bosun came in for his tea, saw the sheets drying on the rail and ordered them binned. I told him they were for the captain's birthday, and he ate a slice of Victoria sponge to prove he was not impressed. We raised the Azores with Pilot asleep in the sugar, and I kept the last sheet, one print scrolled round with flowers, pinned above the range where nobody would think to wipe it.
