Outlined paw print on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small paw print with four toe pads and a larger main pad is outlined on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and unshaded, and the ink reads as light or white against the skin rather than as black or coloured. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with the fingers and nails of the hand cropped at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The prints came out of the drizzle in pairs, pale outlines on the black pavement, and Nell Quigley followed them under the railway arch with her torch angled low so the light would catch their edges. Four toes and a larger pad at the heel, each one ringed in something that glimmered like frost, though it was late October and the wind off the canal was almost warm. The rescue had rung at ten. Biscuit, a lurcher with one folded ear, had slipped his lead on Tanner's Lane and not been seen since.

The trail led to the lock, to a bench with its paint worn to bare wood, where someone had left a dented tin bowl and a folded copy of the racing pages weighted with a stone. Nell knew that bench. Walter Ibbotson had fed the strays there every night for twenty years until his hip gave out and the ambulance took him up the hill to the infirmary. Biscuit had been his dog for only the last two of those years, and the prints circled the bench three times before they turned uphill.

They ended at the glass doors of the infirmary, where a lurcher sat very upright with his nose a hand's width from the pane. Above him, a window on the fourth floor glowed yellow, and somebody's shadow crossed it and came back.

Nell clipped the lead on. Biscuit leaned into her shins, heavy and certain, and she waited while he looked up at the window one last time. When they turned away, the pale rings on the wet paving were already fading under the lamp, one by one, as if the rain had decided to keep the path for itself.
