Floral teacup and saucer
Realism · Colour · Photo
A teacup and saucer decorated with pink roses, blue flowers and green leaves, with a small amount of orange detail inside the rim. The design uses soft, painted-looking shading with a thick black outline around the whole cup and saucer. Pastel pinks, blues and greens dominate on a plain skin background, and the cup is centred with the saucer sitting below it.

The bell over the salvage hatch was still swinging when you lifted the cup out of the crate, and Mags was already naming a price before you had turned it to the light. "Real porcelain," she said. "Nobody's made that since the kilns went dark. Ask me what a sip of proper tea costs out here."

You didn't ask. You were looking at the roses. Three of them climbed the cup in soft pinks that had faded only at the edges, their leaves a green the dust hadn't managed to dull, and between them sat a cluster of small blue flowers as if someone had flicked paint from a brush. The saucer carried the same roses along its rim, and underneath, a ring of blue sat on the base like a second, quieter foot. Inside the cup, a fleck of orange caught the light where the glaze had pooled.
Mags wanted two weeks of filtered water and a tin of dried mint. You offered a week and a half of your own, which she accepted with the look of someone who had won without trying. "Came from a greenhouse under the old Ashgrove dome," she said, wrapping it in an oily cloth. "The woman who painted these kept the roses alive by singing to them, or so the story goes. Nobody's checked."
That evening you carried the cup up the ladder to the north vent, where the recycler hummed and the light came through in a hard white stripe. You poured in water warmed on the coil, and it took on the faintest colour from the glaze. The orange fleck rose to the surface and spread, a little sunset in the dark ceramic. You set the saucer beside the cup, turned the handle toward the window, and kept watching until the roses were the only thing left in the room.
