Black ink drawing of a flourished script letter K with swirling curls and a small letter N below, shown as a tattoo design on a pale background.

Flourished script letter K design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single large script letter K drawn in black ink with long, looping flourishes and curled ends, set against a pale wood-grain background. A small capital N sits in the lower left corner. The linework is smooth and even with no shading, and the composition places the K across the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ledger had been kept in a copperplate hand for forty years before Mr Harrowgate took it over, and he never once got the loops right. Every K in the parish register came out like a pair of ram's horns with a tail trailing off the page, and the vicar said it was the only thing in the building that refused to be tidied. I inherited the ink pots and the blotting paper when his eyes gave out, along with a drawer of spoiled sheets he would not let me burn.

In the drawer, folded inside a receipt for coal, was a single K he had drafted the winter his wife left for Leeds. It was not a letter at all, really. The upright stroke swept up into two curls like a fern unrolling, and the leg fell away into a loop so wide it could have held a small boat. Beside it, low in the corner, he had written a plain N, as if to say whose letter it was, or perhaps whose it had been meant to be.

I asked him once what the flourish was for. He pushed his spectacles up and said a K ought to have room to leave. Then he went back to the parish burials, and I copied out the N in my own careful hand and put the sheet back where I found it, folded around its coal receipt, the loop still open at the bottom of the drawer.
