The coach to the coast left Carlisle twenty minutes late, and Marion spent the first hour of it pretending not to watch the lane behind them for her brother's car. Four cousins had been bridesmaids before her. None of them had ever been asked to carry the ring in a pocket with a hole in it, and she kept her fingers pressed against the lining the whole way down the A66.

She sat with the bride in a room that smelled of lavender polish while her sister breathed in fours, and when the bell rang for the procession she stood up so fast the chair skidded across the boards.

Outside the chapel, four swallows had set down on the wire above the churchyard wall. They were restless, shifting their weight from foot to foot, and as the first notes of the organ climbed through the open door they lifted all together, turned once over the lych-gate and went off low across the fields towards the water. Her father, who had never once in his life looked up at birds, stopped at the gate with his hand on the latch and watched them until they were specks.

Marion found the ring in her pocket, whole after all, and walked on up the path without touching the hole again.
