A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara climbed the iron ladder on Tanner Street every dusk, and every dusk the moths came to meet her. The old men at the tea stall said the lamps had been lit by hand since the mills closed, and that no gas man had ever held a flame so long without letting it gutter. Nobody asked how she managed it.

One November night the fog came up off the canal so thick that the lamps went out one by one, from the bottom of the town upward. A boy from the bakery was lost somewhere near the locks, crying for his mother. Mara took the last flame she had, a small orange thing in a tin cup, and went down the steps into the water-smell.

Where the flame touched the fog, the fog did not burn. It bent. The mist folded itself into wings of soot and red ash, and the flame lifted from the cup and went ahead of her, flickering, turning back to check she followed. Behind it came other lights, a dozen butterflies of cinder and paper-thin copper, circling the boy until his crying stopped and his small hand caught hold of a sleeve.

They walked him home before dawn. The fog lifted off the canal like a sheet pulled from a bed. When the baker's wife pressed a loaf on Mara in thanks, the crust was warm and dusted black with wing-ash. Mara never told anyone what she had seen. She only lit the lamps a little earlier after that, so the moths could find their way.
